Submissions Period: January 15 – April 15, 2023

Pangyrus publishes well-crafted, thought-provoking essays, poems, stories, and comics online and in two print editions each year (one anthology and one specialty book). We welcome work in any genre and on all topics.

Some of the work we accept will appear in our 11th print issue! The theme for the issue is Choices. Choices define us — everyday choices, life choices, choices we wish we’d made, choices that the world or country or other people don’t allow us to make. Let’s hear about yours in poetry, essays, and stories.

We’re especially interested in writing that explores the tensions and intersections between privilege and oppression. Consider Aristotle’s quote, “For what is the best choice for each individual is the highest it is possible for him to achieve.” Only the extremely privileged think that choices shape all of our reality. Our daily reality is profoundly shaped by choices that were never up to us. Or that we do not recognize as choices. Or whose costs make them unthinkable. And yet, every writer knows they shape our stories. Our art. Our meanings.

Along with general submissions — on the theme of Choices or not — we are interested in a few specific categories: Zest!; In Sickness and In Health; Field Notes; Schooled; Generations; and The Sounding Board – themed pieces in every genre. For full descriptions of these categories please visit this section of our Submittable page. We encourage you to read us at pangyrus.com to get a sense of what we’re looking for.

If you think our readers will find it entertaining and compelling, send it our way. We read every submission that we get with fresh eyes and open minds.
