1958

an uncompromisable panic attack laundry list:
a boho beatnik tuned-in psilocybin inner-space minibus,
a slow-twitch self-adhesive Van Allen Belt,
a tandoori comfort food tailgate party noir,
the Watson-Crick genetic code of
anti-psychotic Spanglish hive-mind,
a thalidomide cancer-stick software inbox,
a smart-ass think-tank solar wind nanosecond,
an inner-city NOLA bariatric
knee-jerk Bigfoot nutter,
an anti-nuclear self-denigrating sex-kitten
with a short fuse!

(According to the “Time-Traveler by Merriam-Webster” website, all of the above words — with the obvious exceptions of “a, an, of, the,” and “with” — are first known to have been used in 1958.)

Kevin Browne:

Why 1958? I’ll let the reader speculate about that. I’ve long been interested in the etymology of words and idioms and their linguistic and social lives. I love seeing how well or not the words and idiomatic introductions from 67 years ago have endured in everyday speech. Still mainstream, or marginalized and quaint?

The idea to create a poem from these idioms came quickly once I learned of this tool. I wanted to see what kind of image of American life could emerge from using only new words from one year. My goal was to let the words and idioms speak to those times, and the idea of framing everything as part of an urgent laundry list seemed to fit how I wanted to poem to develop.
