Sanctuary

Imagine, a wall once refused to destroy
the well-trimmed hedge bordering the limits
around an 80 acre preserve set aside
to protect a few avian species found
nowhere beyond this border river valley
fiercely contested by forces far removed
from surrounding citrus groves now worked
by earlier harvesters’ grandchildren
and several cousins fearing their own
suddenly proclaimed deportation orders.

Milton Jordan:

Early in the 2025 regular session of the Texas Legislature the Governor abandoned Operation Lonestar, his state funded plan to “secure the border.” Several media outlets ran a photo of the single wall panel the plan had constructed in 2024. That abandoned section of a wall seemed to speak directly to the Governor’s decision to abandon this already costly partisan political theater. So, I thought to give the wall itself agency in the decision.
