Animation

Mornings, I wring out my dreams,
hang them on the clothesline
to dry. When no one is watching,
I suck what’s gathered
from the bottom edge.
Oh, the taste of a cartoon page
during the illusion
of movement. How reality
gets lost each time the puppet
shuffles cards, the quick
flip as bedsheets whip,
another actor on a string.

Beth Williams:

A lot of my poems begin as snippets of dreams. I do think my sleep state has a lot to say to my waking one, and it’s not always positive. The title “Animation” came later, comparing dream sequence to those cartoon books we quickly flip through. It’s the motion that makes the characters move. But what’s the reason for the dream?
